Empowering Future Counselors Through Self-Reflection at Bowie State University
This past August, I had the privilege of hosting a transformative journaling session at Bowie State University, designed specifically for students in the Family Counseling course. As one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Bowie State University has a legacy of nurturing leaders, and it was an honor to contribute to the growth of its future counselors.
The session focused on self-reflection, encouraging participants to unpack their experiences in the Family Counseling course and explore how these insights could shape their professional journeys. By diving into their personal growth and understanding the power of vulnerability, the students were equipped with tools to better connect with and support future clients.
This event highlighted the demographic importance of providing culturally attuned spaces where students of color can embrace self-discovery in a supportive environment. Journaling allowed these future counselors to reflect deeply on their unique experiences and develop the emotional intelligence needed to thrive in a field where empathy and understanding are paramount.
At its core, this session was about empowering the next generation of counselors to leverage their personal stories and cultural perspectives to create meaningful change. Bowie State University’s commitment to fostering diverse, compassionate leaders aligns beautifully with my mission of nurturing self-awareness and growth through reflective practices.
Together, we are pollinating minds with purpose—one journal entry at a time.
