Empowering Young Minds: Journaling with the George Wythe High School Cheerleaders

On August 17, 2024, I had the privilege of working with the inspiring cheerleaders of George Wythe High School for a special journaling session. This event was more than just a workshop—it was a heartfelt experience of self-discovery, empowerment, and connection.

High school is often a pivotal time when young people grapple with questions about their identity and purpose. It can be overwhelming, with external labels and expectations often shaping their sense of self. Our session aimed to provide these young women with tools to navigate these challenges, using journaling as a safe space for reflection and self-care.

From the moment we started, it was clear that this team already shared a strong sisterhood. The room was filled with laughter, smiles, and even a few tears as they opened up about their experiences and supported one another. Through this bond, they demonstrated how powerful it is to have a community that lifts each other up.

We delved into the importance of breaking free from labels, recognizing them as reflections of others’ limitations rather than their own truths. Through guided prompts, the cheerleaders explored who they are and who they aspire to become, embracing the idea that their self-worth is defined by them alone.

It was incredible to see their excitement as they began their journaling journey. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grow closer to their teammates, their coach, and themselves. By the end of the session, they left not only with new tools for self-care but also with a renewed appreciation for their shared bond.

Working with these young women was a powerful reminder of the importance of instilling self-awareness and resilience at a young age. Journaling can be a lifelong tool for navigating difficulties and embracing personal growth, and I’m grateful to have played a part in their journey.
